My boyfriend went to a job interview and they asked him some personal questions. Is this normal?
My boyfriend went to apply for a job at a security company in which he would be refilling ATM machines. He was interviewed on the spot and the lady read a questionnaire and asked if he was married/divorced/engaged/had a girlfriend. When he said that yes, he had a girlfriend, she asked him my name, phone number and how long we'd been together. She continued to ask him some other questions about drugs/alcohol/his tattoos and if he'd be willing to take a lie detector test. I can understand the other questions, but why would she need to know anything about me? He said she was like 60 years old so there's no way she was interested in him or anything and he thought they might ask those questions just to see how he responds and if he tells the truth or something. Still, I'm a little creeped out that a place of employment "needs" to know that about someone. Anyone have any ideas why this would be or is it simply because of the trust they'd need to have in him for the position?
It is illegal to ask any questions regarding your marital status. The answers to those questions could be used to deny you employment as the company may be prejudiced against married or divorced individuals.
They are within their rights to inform him that a drug test and lie detector test are part of the pre-employment criteria.
If he does not get the job, I would report this person to her supervisor or an officer of the company. She is putting her company in jeopardy of a lawsuit.
